Money-blindness
Why Members never see rates, amounts, or invoices anywhere in Hoursmith — and how that makes the app safe to use with contractors.
Hoursmith is built so you can invite contractors and staff to track time without ever exposing what you bill. That's what we call money-blindness: Members never see rates or amounts, anywhere.
What Members can't see
- No rates or amounts — anywhere in the app. Every price, total, and rate is hidden from Members.
- No invoices — the invoice navigation is hidden and the invoice routes are blocked.
- No clients — Members have no access to the client list or client pages.
- Projects are limited — Members only see the projects they're explicitly added to. See Project access.
What Members can do
Members can track their own time on projects they're on and work on tasks assigned to them. They get a focused Dashboard scoped to their own data, with hours but no money.
It carries through everywhere
Money-blindness isn't just hidden menus. Notifications and snippets never carry money either — so a Member won't catch a glimpse of an amount in an alert or a preview. Reports follow the same rule: the Revenue and Uninvoiced tabs are hidden from Members, and the Time and Projects reports hide every amount. See Money visibility by role.
This is why Hoursmith is safe to use with contractors: invite them as Members and they can log time against your projects without ever seeing your rates, your clients, or your invoices.
Troubleshooting
- A Member says they can't see invoices. That's by design — Members have no invoice access at all. See Member can't see invoices.
- A Member needs to see money or clients. Give them a manage-tier role instead. See Change roles.
