Change roles

Promote or demote teammates from Settings → Team. You can only manage people at or below your rank, and you can't promote anyone to Owner.

As your team changes, you can update people's roles from Settings → Team. A few guardrails keep the role hierarchy intact.

Owner, Admin, and Manager can change roles, but only for members at or below your own rank.

Where to find it

Go to Settings → Team and open the member you want to change.

Change someone's role

Open the member

In Settings → Team, select the teammate whose role you want to change.

Pick the new role

Choose a different role. Your change takes effect immediately.

The rules

  • No promoting to Owner. You can't set anyone's role to Owner from here — that's handled by Transfer ownership, which there's exactly one of.
  • You can't change your own role.
  • At or below your rank only. You can only manage members at your role or lower — you can't act on someone ranked above you.

Demoting someone to Member makes them money-blind and project-scoped right away: they lose access to clients, invoices, money, and any project they're not explicitly on. See Money-blindness and Project access.

Troubleshooting

  • I can't change a particular person. They're probably ranked at or above you. Only an equal-or-higher role can manage them.
  • Owner isn't in the list. Promotion to Owner only happens via Transfer ownership.
