Danger zone
Export your workspace data as JSON, or close the workspace — what each does and exactly what happens to your data and subscription.
The Danger zone (/settings/danger) holds two high-stakes actions: a full data export and
closing the workspace.
- Role
- Owner
The Danger zone is Owner-only. Admins and other roles can't see it.
Export your data
Click Export your data → Download export to get a single JSON file of this workspace. It includes:
- the organization,
- members (without credentials),
- clients, projects, and tasks,
- time entries,
- invoices and line items,
- activity logs and billing events,
- email logs, and
- email settings (without secrets).
This export is per-workspace — it covers only the workspace you're in, not all the workspaces you belong to. For per-entity CSV exports (clients, projects, time entries), see Export data.
Close this workspace
Closing a workspace is permanent for the team and immediate for billing.
Open Close this workspace
In the Danger zone, click Close this workspace.
Confirm by typing the name
Type the workspace name to confirm. This is deliberate friction — there's no undo.
When you confirm, Hoursmith:
- soft-deletes the workspace and its data,
- cancels any Stripe subscription immediately, and
- clears stored email credentials.
Afterward you land on your next workspace, or on a "create your first workspace" screen if it was your last one.
Export first. Closing a workspace cancels billing right away and removes your access to its data. A permanent hard delete is a manual operator step that happens after the soft delete.
Troubleshooting
- I don't see the Danger zone. It's Owner-only. If you need to close a workspace and you're not the owner, ask the owner — or have ownership transferred to you first.
- I want my data after closing. Run the export before you close — access goes away once the workspace is closed.
