Hoursmith for contractors
You've been invited as a Member. Here's what you can and can't see, how to track your time, work your assigned tasks, and stay in the loop.
You've been invited to a Hoursmith workspace as a Member. This page is for you: what you'll see, what you won't, and how to do your job — tracking time and working the tasks you've been assigned.
Who this is for
Contractors and team members invited to a workspace as a Member. Your view is deliberately focused: you see your projects and your work, and nothing about money.
What you can see
As a Member you can:
- Track your own time on the projects you've been added to.
- Work on tasks assigned to you, and see the projects those tasks live in.
- See a Dashboard scoped to you — your hours and your work, not the whole company's.
What you can't see — and why
Hoursmith calls this money-blindness. As a Member, you never see money, anywhere:
- No rates or amounts. Every price, rate, and total is hidden from you across the entire app.
- No invoices. Invoicing is hidden and its pages are blocked for Members.
- No client list. You don't see clients or client pages.
- Only your projects. You see the projects you've been explicitly added to — not the rest of the workspace.
This isn't about trust — it's the design. It lets businesses bring contractors in to track time without exposing their pricing or client relationships. If you ever wonder why an invoice or a rate isn't visible to you, that's why. The full explanation lives in Money-blindness.
Even notifications and previews stay money-free for Members — you won't catch an amount in an alert. If you need to see money or clients for your role, ask a workspace admin to change your role.
Get set up
Accept your invite
Open the invite email and follow the link to join the workspace and set your password.
Find your projects
After signing in, you'll see the projects you've been added to. If a project you expect is missing, ask an admin to add you — Members only see projects they're on. See Project access.
Check your assigned tasks
Look for the tasks assigned to you. These are the work items the team wants you to pick up. See Tasks.
Track your time
The fastest way is the live timer — start it when you begin work, stop it when you're done.
Start the timer
Start the timer from the top bar, pick your project, and optionally the task you're working on.
Stop when you're done
Stop the timer and the entry is saved against your project. You can also log time by hand if you forgot to start it. See Time tracking and The live timer.
Add a short note to each entry so the team knows what you worked on. You'll see your hours — but not any amount, since rates are hidden from Members.
Working tasks and staying in the loop
Your assigned tasks are your to-do list inside the workspace. On a task you can follow along and use comments to ask questions or post updates, and @-mention a teammate to get their attention. See Tasks.
Questions you might have
- "Why can't I see what I'm being paid?" Members are money-blind by design — rates and amounts are hidden from everyone with the Member role. Your pay is handled with whoever hired you, outside this view.
- "I can't find a project." You only see projects you've been added to. Ask an admin to add you. See Project access.
- "I need to see invoices or clients." That requires a different role. Ask a workspace admin.
