Track time from Chrome
Start and stop timers, save short work, log manual time, and edit eligible recent entries without leaving the current tab.
The toolbar popup, My Day, and Time sections all use the same server-side timer as the Hoursmith web app. Starting it in one place makes it visible everywhere.
The single-field project/task pickers and the Save as 5 minutes extension action require Hoursmith for Chrome 0.3.0 or later. The web app already uses the current short-timer choices.
Start a timer
Choose a project
Search for and choose a project. In version 0.3.0+, typing and choosing share the same Project field, which can load additional authorized results beyond the first cached page.
Choose a task (optional)
After selecting a project, choose a task or leave it empty. In version 0.3.0+, the task gets a fresh single search field and changing the project clears its old choice and search.
Add a note and start
Add an optional note, then choose Start timer. Starting from a task uses that task's authoritative billable setting, including when you use a pinned or recent combination.
You can pin common project or project-and-task combinations, use recent combinations, and open the selected project or task in the full web app.
While the timer is running
The timer shows the project, optional task, and live duration. Edit the Running note and choose Save without stopping the timer.
Hoursmith enforces the one-timer rule across the web app, Chrome extension, workspaces, and devices.
Stop a short or long timer
- Under 5 minutes in version 0.3.0+: choose Save as 5 minutes, Discard, or Keep running. Saving keeps the original project, task, note, billability, and start time.
- 5 minutes to 8 hours: choose Stop to save the elapsed time.
- Over 8 hours: keep the full time, Trim to 8h, or discard it.
You can also choose Discard timer at any point; Hoursmith asks for confirmation before deleting the whole running entry.
Log manual time
Choose Log time in the popup or use the form in Time or Quick capture. You can select the work date, project, optional task, note, and billability, then enter a duration or matching start and end clock times. Hoursmith validates supported human duration formats and the 24-hour limit.
Fixed-fee and Non-billable project policy remains authoritative even if a form shows a billable choice. See Billable vs non-billable time.
Edit recent entries
The Time section lets you update the note or duration on eligible completed entries and delete them with confirmation. Invoiced entries remain locked. A running entry is kept in the timer surface and cannot be changed through manual-entry edit or delete actions.
During a brief connection loss, only timer start, stop, and running-note actions are queued for ordered replay. Review offline behavior and conflicts before relying on the extension away from a connection.

Tasks and current-page capture
Work with assigned tasks and turn an explicitly captured page into a reviewed Hoursmith task, time entry, expense, client, or project.
