Client portal troubleshooting

Fix common client-portal problems — sign-in links, missing invoices, the Pay button, and access on the Free plan.

The portal isn't available

The portal requires a Studio or Agency plan. On Free the portal is off — but single-invoice quick-pay links (/i/[token]) still work on any plan. See Public links and views.

The login page always shows a neutral confirmation, so the absence of an error doesn't mean the email failed. Check that:

  • the contact is Portal enabled, and
  • the email they entered matches the contact exactly.

Then ask them to check their spam folder. See also I didn't receive an email.

Magic links are single-use and short-lived. Have the client request a new one from /portal/login. If they request several in quick succession, the page is rate-limited — wait a moment and try again. See Magic-link login.

A client can't see an invoice

The portal lists only Sent, Paid, and Cancelled invoices — Drafts are hidden. If an invoice is missing, confirm it's been sent. Clients only ever see their own invoices in your workspace.

The Pay button is missing

The Pay button shows only when the invoice is not paid, not cancelled, and has a balance above zero. Card payment also needs Stripe connected with Charges enabled: Yes. See Accept card payments and Client can't pay.

A client expected to see projects or messages

The portal is invoices only. Clients view and pay invoices there — that's the full scope of the portal today.
