How Hoursmith compares

An honest look at where Hoursmith fits — what it's best for, what it isn't, and how to think about it next to other time-tracking and billing tools.

There's no single best tool — only the right fit for how you work. This section is meant to help you make that call honestly. We'll be plain about what Hoursmith does well and where another tool may serve you better.

A note on these pages: we describe other tools only in general, category-level terms and avoid quoting their prices or feature lists, since those change. For the latest on any tool, check its own site. Where Hoursmith has a clear, true difference, we state it as a fact about Hoursmith.

What Hoursmith is

Hoursmith is time tracking plus invoicing for freelancers, consultants, and small agencies, built around one line: Clients → Projects → Tasks → Time → Invoices → Payment. See What is Hoursmith? and The core workflow.

Where Hoursmith is a strong fit

  • You bill for your time and want tracked hours to become invoices without re-keying.
  • You want flat-fee pricing instead of paying per seat as your team grows. See Flat-fee vs per-seat.
  • You want payments in your own Stripe account — Hoursmith never holds your money. See Connect Stripe.
  • You want invoices from your own email domain. See Email settings.
  • You work with contractors and want them money-blind and project-scoped. See Money-blindness.
  • You want to automate with a real API, MCP server, and webhooks.

Where another tool may fit better

Hoursmith is focused on purpose. It is not:

  • A full project-management suite — no Gantt charts, resource forecasting, or task dependencies.
  • Accounting, payroll, or HR software, and it doesn't file taxes (CSV export only). See Export data.
  • A CRM or a proposal/estimate tool.
  • A place that holds your money — by design, funds go straight to your own Stripe account.

If those are central to your work, a dedicated tool in that category will serve you better — and Hoursmith can sit alongside it for time and billing.
