Invoice grouping
Choose how tracked time rolls up into invoice lines — itemized, by project, by task, by project & task, or by project & time.
Grouping controls how a client's time entries are turned into invoice lines. Pick the level of detail your client wants — one line per entry, or a tidy summary per project.

Grouping is chosen in the invoice builder, a manager-tier screen.
The five grouping options
| Grouping | What you get |
|---|---|
| Itemized | One line per time entry. The most detailed view. |
| By project | One line per project, totalling its hours. |
| By task | One line per task. |
| By project & task | A line per task, organised under project headings. This is the default. |
| By project & time | Lines grouped by project, broken out by time. |
Whichever you choose, each entry is first rounded up to the nearest quarter-hour, then combined according to the grouping.
Expenses always render under their own "Expenses" group, regardless of how time is grouped. See Add expenses.
Change the grouping
Open or build the invoice
Start a new invoice, or edit a draft (only Drafts can change).
Pick a grouping
Choose one of the five options. Hoursmith re-lays the lines instantly so you can compare.
Create or save
When the layout looks right, Create the draft (or save your edits).
Tips
- Clients who want to see every detail are best served by Itemized; clients who prefer a clean summary suit By project.
- Switching grouping on a draft rebuilds its lines. If you've added custom lines, re-check them afterwards.
Create an invoice
Build a draft invoice from a client's billable, un-invoiced time. Pick a date range, choose a grouping, deselect entries, and create the draft.
Custom lines, discounts & tax
Add fixed-fee or one-off lines, apply a discount, and set a tax rate on an invoice. How quantities, rates, and the order of math work.
